: : : After two years of trying to get my Driver's Licence (moving from Alberta to California, Saskatchewan and back to Alberta) I took the road test for the second time last week and got it. : : This is truly unbelieveable to me as I was always told never to even hope that I would be able to drive. The feeling of independence I have now is almost overwhelming! : : I am 32 and have albinism. My vision is about 20/125 uncorrected (left eye) and 20/200 in the right eye. I have to thank the staff at UC Berkeley Eye Centre (Dr. Ian Bailey) for getting the Ocutech system for me. As well the lady that drove me around while I was training with the Ocutech (one lens mounted on my glasses) and the gentlman who was my driving instructor in the San Francisco area. Still can't believe I drove across all the major freeways and bridges in the San Francisco Bay area - including the Golden Gate Bridge. While using the Ocutech my vision increases to 20/40. : : I restrict myself from driving at night. The most important thing I wanted to mention is the idea of scanning. Especially for people with visual impairments I believe scanning the road and developing this habit is the most important thing to becoming a safe driver. The reason for this is that for those with disabilities they have never done this in the past and have to learn how to do this (with their BiOptic lens system) to drive effectively. When driving making decisions fast and accurately is important as well as judgement. : : Bioptic driving is not for everyone. You have to assess your own situation very carefully. The more dedication and desire the faster you will learn. : : Hopefully my story will be helpful.
