Bioptic Lenses and driving in MinnesotaBDN, low vision driving driver, drive, BiOptic, albinism, albino, macular disease, nystagmus, cataracts, corneal diseases, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, archived by, BIOPTIC DRIVING NETWORK BDN, low vision driving driver, drive, BiOptic, albinism, albino, macular disease, nystagmus, cataracts, corneal diseases, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, archived by, BIOPTIC DRIVING NETWORK Posted by James Erickson on March 25, 2000 at 03:50:15 PM EST: Can anyone here provide information about whether BiOptic lenses can be used in obtaining a drivers license in Minnesota? I saw, on a website listing the vision laws in each state for driving, that for Minnesota, nothing is mentioned about BiOptic lenses. I've searched through MN's DMV websites and driving laws and can't find anything either. I have congenital nystagmus and live in St. Paul. I am 20/100 uncorrected in my better eye, 20/200 uncorrected in my worse eye. With my glasses, I am about 20/70 in my better eye and about 20/100 in my worse eye. Without the nystagmus, my acuity would be much better. Please, any information would be appreciated very much. Any information on low-vision specialists in the Twin Cities that might actually know about BiOptic lenses and using them to drive would be very much appreciated as well. There seems to be a lot of ignorance in MN about this sort of thing. One time, I finally was able to speak 1 on 1 with someone in the Driver Evaluation Unit of the MN DMV and when I asked about restricted licenses, they said there was no such thing in MN. This kind of information has been hard to come by in MN. I am at the end of my rope with public transportation in the Twin Cities. The Twin Cities has one of the worst public transit systems in the US for a metropolitan area of its size. It is not a good place to live for someone who cannot drive. I am determined to do whatever it takes to get a drivers license, even a restricted one. I will even consider moving to a small town or to another state, at this point, if that's what it takes for me to be able to drive and gain some independence. Thank you in advance for any help. James
